On Saturday the 29th, we got our first snow flurries in the valley. It was a cold, cold storm! We drove to Payson for a high school marching band competition, and it was 32° with snow coming down pretty hard and lots of wind. Our poor daughter had to march in that weather on a muddy field! But she had fun and the band took first place. This photo was on Sunday, and most of the snow on the mountains had melted that afternoon. You can just see a little on the peaks far in the background. The leaves on…

Yesterday was officially the first day of fall, and voila — we got snow on the mountains for the first time this season. I’m usually sad to see summer go and to know winter is on the way, but this year it isn’t so bad. With our baby last spring, this summer has not been as active a time for our family. We didn’t even go boating this summer once, and that’s a big deal for us. And likewise, our gardens have had minimal attention this year. In the vegetable garden, we only grew two tomato plants: a ‘Better Bush’…

I’m on vacation all this week, so I hope my newly planted flowers are doing well! I see that it got cold in Utah, and I hope it doesn’t give us a surprise freeze at night. We put our houseplants on our covered deck so the neighbor girl could water them when she feeds our cats. Hope we don’t lose them to the cold! Before we left, I got almost everything planted, but there are still some Hibiscus moscheutos and a few iceplants sitting in small pots. The Hibiscus were just too small to plant out yet, and I’m saving…

This should be a warning for me next time we have warm spring weather, and I’m tempted to plant tender things outside before their time: The KSL weather guy is calling it “weather whiplash” and it is surprising how cold it has gotten after last week’s heat! We had temps in the high 60s and even 70 last week; then it rained and cooled on Sunday, and then we got snow flurries and highs in the 40s yesterday and today. I hope it doesn’t hurt my nectarine and cherry fruit — the trees have been blossoming for about a week…

My Forsythia started blooming about four days ago and really got full in the past two days. I love this shrub! It really brightens up the earliest spring. I hope its blossoms do OK in the freezing weather we’re having for the next few days. It hailed a little today and is expected to snow tonight in the valleys. This will last through Thursday. I hope it doesn’t kill all the apricot blossoms I’ve noticed this past week (I don’t have an apricot, but there are plenty around). My flowering plum is just starting to open its blossoms, so hopefully this…

Yeah! This is really a sad statement about life in Utah, but today the temp got up to 44 degrees, and it felt great!!! The forecast is for mid-40s all week, and I am so stoked about that! Bring on the spring, that’s all I have to say. Maybe if the ground thaws a little, I’ll take a soil sample by my chlorotic maple and send it in to USU’s soil lab for testing. I’m trying to find out if it’s iron chlorosis, manganese deficiency, or something else wrong with that tree. Once I know, I’ll order some tree implants…

This will probably go down as the coldest week of the year, and perhaps the coldest week in the past several years. We’ve had several days running of nighttime lows below zero (about 4-5 degrees below) and daytime highs around 10-15. It’s bitter. It’s so cold the snow on my driveway is just like sand. The cats’ water dishes keep freezing over. Poor kitties. They get to sleep in the garage, but they really want to be in the house! Anyway, it’s supposed to warm up a little every day for the next seven days, but just to the freezing…

Wow, our weather is really volatile lately! We just got a great snowstorm starting last night, and we have about 8-9 inches on the ground now. I went out this morning to shovel my driveway, and the neighbors were all out with their four-wheeler ATVs with snowplow blades. I got to use one to do my driveway. Fun! It’s nice to get this kind of big snowstorm on a weekend, rather than on a commuting day! It’s supposed to stay just below freezing all week, so perhaps the snow will stick around. It would be nice to have a good…
