    Mild weather

We’ve now had about a week with weather over 40 degrees, and the last two days have been almost 60! It’s been a nice break, since it was in the 20s for almost a week before that. We had snow and ice that didn’t melt off our driveway for a while, but it’s all gone now. But there’s a cold storm coming tonight, with rain turning to snow over the weekend. It’s really fluctuating a lot lately. I just looked back at weather.com’s tracking of last month’s temps, and we had quite a few days in the 60s. The ski…

    First hard snow storm

This is our second day of a three-day series of very cold storms. We got the first snow to actually stick around in our yard yesterday. The kids had some fun sledding after school yesterday and today. The roads are icy and the driveway is impossible to shovel now with ice all over. I still have about 15 small plants in plastic cups on my back deck from rooting cuttings this summer. I think I should bring them into the garage or somewhere less harsh, since the roots may get damaged by not being insulated in the ground. I had…

    Unusual weather this fall

Back around mid-September, we had a strong string of storms and I stopped watering my lawn and gardens around September 11th. Every week, we had one or two good storms through about mid-October. But since then, we’ve hardly had anything. It had looked like it was going to be a cold winter, but then we’ve been setting records for warmth off and on for a few weeks. It was in the 60s on Tuesday this week, and in the high 50s on other days. I have a spot in my lawn that was looking a little sick, and I cut…

    Most leaves are gone now

Look how rich and beautiful my backyard arbor looked just one week ago! And today, the leaves are almost all gone. Wind blew them away this week, and there goes the glory of autumn! A few more shots: The one on left shows more of the tall Swedish Aspens by the arbor, and the one on right is my water birches in front of the house. We had some nice, rich golden colors last week. I still have some yellow quaking aspens in the backyard, too, and they really are prettier than I remember them in past years. Some nice…

The batter swings and the summer flies…

The title of this post is from a recent song by Five for Fighting (The Riddle). Anyway, those words keep running through my mind this week, as we’ve had two storms sweep in and blow summer far away. The first was last Friday, which brought snow to the mountains. It’s pretty to see Mt. Timpanogos and Lone Peak covered in snow, but it’s also sad when you love summer as much as I do. My absolute favorite time of year is from June 1st to mid July. So many flowers are blooming in the garden, and the hillsides are still…

    Spring is coming

Yesterday, we broke 60 degrees for the first time since winter came. It was 64 in Salt Lake, but a little less than that in Utah Valley. Today is forecast for 62 in Pleasant Grove (our local weather station). Very nice! But a storm is now soaking California with rain, and it’s coming here tomorrow. Looks like we’ll stay too warm for snow, but hopefully it doesn’t rain in the mountains (I want to do some more snowboarding soon).

    Warming up!

Hey, it’s warming up this week! It got to over 50 yesterday, and the sun finally feels like an actual sun again. You can feel the radiant warmth on your face when you stand in the sunlight. It’s nice to know the worst of winter is behind us, and spring is on the way. I need to start my seeds tomorrow.

    Frozen again

I’ve remarked before that it has been a very warm winter, and I’ve been able to do a bit of garden work that I usually can’t do this early. But we got hit with a major storm yesterday, and temps are very cold now. They say it might hit 10 degrees tonight. Salt Lake Valley got much more snow than us yesterday, but we’re all frozen solid. The roads were so bad and slippery that it took me two stinkin’ hours to get to work this morning! Hard to believe it was that slow. I’ve been tempted to do some…
