Winter’s last hurrah (I hope)

BySteve March 23, 2008March 23, 2008

This was my backyard last Sunday (March 16) in the morning and then the same shot late that afternoon. Here’s to hoping that the snow is gone for the season! On Tuesday, we were supposed to have a pretty cold storm, and it was for a few hours, but then it blew away and warmed…

BySteve March 19, 2008March 23, 2008

He created a very nice flyer to advertise the event but had no place to upload it, so here are two versions: Poster version Version with tear-off reminders It’s too bad I can’t make it, but I hope the event goes…

Pruning Ruby Meidiland roses

BySteve March 19, 2008March 23, 2008

I posted a message in the GardenWeb roses forum about how to prune my Ruby Meidiland roses. I’ve been cutting the canes back to 18″ or so at the end of each winter, but I thought I’d read somewhere that they do well with little or no pruning. Here’s the best answer: Ruby Meidiland belongs…

First try at winter sowing

BySteve March 15, 2008March 23, 2008

I’m trying winter sowing this year, although I’m a little late getting to it. I’ve been busy working on my basement, trying to get it framed and then hoping to finish the whole thing this spring. Winter sowing is basically planting seeds inside a plastic container (I’m using gallon milk jugs) and letting them sit…

Late winter/early spring pruning advice

BySteve March 6, 2008March 6, 2008

A friend asked a question on a forum about what I’m pruning these days, and I thought I’d share the answer here. This is based on what I have in my yard: It’s good to prune any shrubs now EXCEPT those that are spring flowering shrubs. Things like forsythia, flowering cherry, or others that will…

Featured in Utah Valley Magazine

BySteve March 3, 2008February 23, 2015

I mentioned in my previous post about the call from Utah Valley Magazine. The article just went online and you can see it here. It’s fun to see my kids in the center of the spread — a cute photo of them after picking some apples. There’s also an article on the following two pages…

Something new – my garden photos

BySteve February 28, 2008February 6, 2017

Garden Album I got a call about a month ago from a writer working for Utah Valley Magazine who saw this blog and wanted to do a story on gardening in the valley. As part of that discussion, I set up a Google photo album so she could see some of my favorite photos of…

Winter just keeps going on and on and on…

BySteve January 26, 2008January 26, 2008

Wow! After living here for seven winters, this one just seems to stretch on and on and on! We’ve had snow on the ground constantly since mid-December, if I’m remembering right; that’s almost a month-and-a-half of snow on the ground. In past winters, the snow has always melted within two days after a storm, except…

So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flow So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flower!! Haha, i’ve grown Cavendish bananas for maybe six or seven years now and had multiple flowers that didn’t produce viable fruit. Really hoping this one produces an amazing rack of bananas! Also, this plant is an example of good things happen on social media. I met @fair_oaks_tropiculture through Instagram, and he so generously gave me this banana plant when I visited his awesome food forest and garden. What a cool thing!

Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t this so much better than just a lawn? It’s all organically grown, and we don’t have much of an issue with bad bugs. The good predator bugs and birds thrive and keep things in balance. We do have some slug and snail issues, and nature keeps trying to help us with alligator lizards showing up to eat them, but alas, our cats catch some of our lizard friends and interfere with the balance of nature. Have you thought of replacing some lawn with flowerbeds? Any questions I can help you with? Feel free to post Qs in the comments 💚

We are so happy to be hosting this family of blueb We are so happy to be hosting this family of bluebirds in our backyard! As an added bonus, they fly around our garden picking up bugs. What great guests! 😊 I was surprised how quickly they discovered the birdhouse right after we put it up. They spent weeks just checking it out, in and out constantly, until they started bringing nesting materials. Now, we just need to make sure the cats aren’t around when the chicks fledge!

Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, do you do this? Especially with vigorous plants that take a lot out of the soil like these bananas, chopping the trimmings and piling them around the plant helps to return those nutrients back to the soil. Today it was the machete, but sometimes I chop these trimmed stems and old leaves up with the lawnmower for an even finer shredding. With bananas, the pile also helps to keep the soil moist.

Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harve Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harvested the rest of the mandarins off this unidentified variety that we’re growing. Do you think it’s gold nugget? Swipe to see a close-up. The bumpy skin looks like gold nugget to me, and the fact that it ripens so late in the season seems to fit.

And cute Santia in the background, doing some spring weeding! 😍💜💚 These ranunculus keep coming back stronger every spring. I think this is our third spring with them. I have found that some that are competing with a big maple’s roots are not as vigorous, but the ones over here are doing great! Are you enjoying spring? Getting a lot done in the garden?
