First snow in the valley

BySteve October 1, 2007

On Saturday the 29th, we got our first snow flurries in the valley. It was a cold, cold storm! We drove to Payson for a high school marching band competition, and it was 32° with snow coming down pretty hard and lots of wind. Our poor daughter had to march in that weather on a…

First snow on the mountains; fall is here!

BySteve September 24, 2007September 24, 2007

Yesterday was officially the first day of fall, and voila — we got snow on the mountains for the first time this season. I’m usually sad to see summer go and to know winter is on the way, but this year it isn’t so bad. With our baby last spring, this summer has not been…

One million new trees in ten years!

BySteve September 18, 2007

The Deseret Morning News published an editorial on Sept. 15 calling on Salt Lakers to participate in planting one million trees by 2017. The county and a number of cities have endorsed the effort. I hope there is some plan in place. They need something like the Sacramento Tree Foundation, which did great work when…

Cross pollination and fruit trees

BySteve September 16, 2007

Did you know apples need pollination from a different kind of apple tree? Or that crabapples are good pollen sources for apple trees? I knew cherries were particular like this, but I didn’t realize that apples had the same kind of issues. I planted two different kinds of apple trees right next to each other…

Blue River Hibiscus are blooming!

BySteve September 12, 2007September 13, 2007

Last winter, I traded seeds with a guy from New York on Gardenweb.com’s perennial forum. He had seeds for these wonderful Hibiscus moscheutos ‘Blue River’ and I had to give them a try. I don’t usually go for large, gaudy flowers, but these were just too cool to pass up. I had about a dozen…

Picked our Jonathan apples!

BySteve September 10, 2007September 10, 2007

Check out these babies — three really big bowls like this, filled with Jonathan apples. I like these apples a lot; they taste more like green apples than red ones and they ripen a lot earlier than my Granny Smith apples. I believe we harvested these last Thursday, September 6th. That was even a little…

Petunias are really tender perennials

BySteve August 26, 2007August 26, 2007

I just learned something new this week. It turns out petunias aren’t true annuals — they’re really tender perennials that die when they freeze. So, I can overwinter them in the basement and plant them out again next spring. And they grow well from cuttings. So, I plan to make some cuttings from my pink…

Masked critter eating my cats’ food!

BySteve August 22, 2007August 22, 2007

This little masked bandit had been eating my cats’ food in the garage lately. I had a hunch it was a raccoon since the water dish would be really dirty, and I know raccoons like to wash their hands in water when they eat. My neighbor has this live trap, and it worked like a…

So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flow So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flower!! Haha, i’ve grown Cavendish bananas for maybe six or seven years now and had multiple flowers that didn’t produce viable fruit. Really hoping this one produces an amazing rack of bananas! Also, this plant is an example of good things happen on social media. I met @fair_oaks_tropiculture through Instagram, and he so generously gave me this banana plant when I visited his awesome food forest and garden. What a cool thing!

Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t this so much better than just a lawn? It’s all organically grown, and we don’t have much of an issue with bad bugs. The good predator bugs and birds thrive and keep things in balance. We do have some slug and snail issues, and nature keeps trying to help us with alligator lizards showing up to eat them, but alas, our cats catch some of our lizard friends and interfere with the balance of nature. Have you thought of replacing some lawn with flowerbeds? Any questions I can help you with? Feel free to post Qs in the comments 💚

We are so happy to be hosting this family of blueb We are so happy to be hosting this family of bluebirds in our backyard! As an added bonus, they fly around our garden picking up bugs. What great guests! 😊 I was surprised how quickly they discovered the birdhouse right after we put it up. They spent weeks just checking it out, in and out constantly, until they started bringing nesting materials. Now, we just need to make sure the cats aren’t around when the chicks fledge!

Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, do you do this? Especially with vigorous plants that take a lot out of the soil like these bananas, chopping the trimmings and piling them around the plant helps to return those nutrients back to the soil. Today it was the machete, but sometimes I chop these trimmed stems and old leaves up with the lawnmower for an even finer shredding. With bananas, the pile also helps to keep the soil moist.

Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harve Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harvested the rest of the mandarins off this unidentified variety that we’re growing. Do you think it’s gold nugget? Swipe to see a close-up. The bumpy skin looks like gold nugget to me, and the fact that it ripens so late in the season seems to fit.

And cute Santia in the background, doing some spring weeding! 😍💜💚 These ranunculus keep coming back stronger every spring. I think this is our third spring with them. I have found that some that are competing with a big maple’s roots are not as vigorous, but the ones over here are doing great! Are you enjoying spring? Getting a lot done in the garden?
