An annual vine I might try: Lab-lab

BySteve August 17, 2007August 19, 2007

I read about this vine today, and it turns out to be one that I saw at the Denver Botanic Garden while traveling for work last week. I liked it. Didn’t know it was only an annual, but it might be worth a try on my backyard arbor. That is, if it can compete with…

Maple disappointment!

BySteve August 15, 2007September 13, 2007

I’ve been laboring under the delusion that I was growing a Rocky Mountain Maple from seed I collected up American Fork Canyon. Well, I now think this is probably just a lousy Box Elder tree. It’s awfully similar to the small Box Elder I was growing in a pot until someone at GardenWeb identified it…

Trimmed my rose hedge last weekend

BySteve August 15, 2007

Last Saturday, I trimmed my Pink Simplicity rose hedge to a uniform four feet or maybe slightly less. They had been quite unruly, because I didn’t prune them at all this spring while I was trying to figure out what was causing them to abort their first wave of flowerbuds. They look nice and neat,…

A few more summer bloomers

BySteve August 14, 2007August 14, 2007

I’ve had some success with cutting-grown Missouri Evening Primroses (Oenothera missouriensis, also called Ozark Sundrops). I made some cuttings last summer and planted the new clones out this spring. These do not seem to be invasive like their Mexican cousins, so I’m liking them a lot. Here’s an example of the annual Geraniums I planted…

Hibiscus syriacus are great summer shrubs

BySteve August 14, 2007August 14, 2007

I really enjoy my Hibiscus shrubs. These go by several names, including Hibiscus syriacus, Rose of Sharon, or Hibiscus Rose. I have three single-flowered ones and five double-flowered. They all start flowering some time in June, I think, and they keep going quite well through September. The photo at left is from last year in…

Container plantings on my deck

BySteve August 14, 2007August 14, 2007

Last month, I planted some things in containers on my backyard deck. I was a little late getting to these, since half of summer was already gone, but I was just in time for the big extended family water party in our backyard. These photos were taken on July 24th, about a week after planting…

BySteve August 4, 2007August 4, 2007

Here are some of the plants that have been looking good in my yard this time of year: So, starting from the top left, we have: A big clump of annual Rudbeckia, one of my favorite annuals Dianthus ‘Brilliancy’ which I grew from seed this year A wave petunia that I waited too long to…

Spider mites on my apples, cherries, and willow

BySteve August 3, 2007March 30, 2014

I posted the following on GardenWeb’s Rocky Mountain Forum: I’ve NEVER had a problem with mites like I do now. Is it caused by this unusually hot, dry summer we’ve had? Maybe my trees have had more water stress in this weather, making them more susceptible? Here’s what’s happening: Starting in June, I got spider…

So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flow So many hopes riding on this Blue Java banana flower!! Haha, i’ve grown Cavendish bananas for maybe six or seven years now and had multiple flowers that didn’t produce viable fruit. Really hoping this one produces an amazing rack of bananas! Also, this plant is an example of good things happen on social media. I met @fair_oaks_tropiculture through Instagram, and he so generously gave me this banana plant when I visited his awesome food forest and garden. What a cool thing!

Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t Just a little walk along the front garden. Isn’t this so much better than just a lawn? It’s all organically grown, and we don’t have much of an issue with bad bugs. The good predator bugs and birds thrive and keep things in balance. We do have some slug and snail issues, and nature keeps trying to help us with alligator lizards showing up to eat them, but alas, our cats catch some of our lizard friends and interfere with the balance of nature. Have you thought of replacing some lawn with flowerbeds? Any questions I can help you with? Feel free to post Qs in the comments 💚

We are so happy to be hosting this family of blueb We are so happy to be hosting this family of bluebirds in our backyard! As an added bonus, they fly around our garden picking up bugs. What great guests! 😊 I was surprised how quickly they discovered the birdhouse right after we put it up. They spent weeks just checking it out, in and out constantly, until they started bringing nesting materials. Now, we just need to make sure the cats aren’t around when the chicks fledge!

Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, Frog Buddha approves of chop and drop. 🐸 Haha, do you do this? Especially with vigorous plants that take a lot out of the soil like these bananas, chopping the trimmings and piling them around the plant helps to return those nutrients back to the soil. Today it was the machete, but sometimes I chop these trimmed stems and old leaves up with the lawnmower for an even finer shredding. With bananas, the pile also helps to keep the soil moist.

Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harve Help me out, fellow citrus gardeners! I just harvested the rest of the mandarins off this unidentified variety that we’re growing. Do you think it’s gold nugget? Swipe to see a close-up. The bumpy skin looks like gold nugget to me, and the fact that it ripens so late in the season seems to fit.

And cute Santia in the background, doing some spring weeding! 😍💜💚 These ranunculus keep coming back stronger every spring. I think this is our third spring with them. I have found that some that are competing with a big maple’s roots are not as vigorous, but the ones over here are doing great! Are you enjoying spring? Getting a lot done in the garden?
