Corn harvest

Wow a whole month without posting! I am chagrined to have not posted here for all of August. I don’t have much time to put into it this year, since I’m working much of my free time doing construction in my basement (now shooting for finishing it within a month or so!).

img_0839.JPGAnyway, here’s some good news from the garden — we harvested our first round of corn on August 24th. This is that Mirai corn I ordered from Parks seed in 2007 but didn’t plant till this year. I wrote about it when I ordered the seeds, and I was amused by the gushing, almost breathless description of it in the Park’s catalog. Well, we’ve eaten it, and we all agree that this is GOOD corn! I’m not even a fan of corn on the cob, but I like this. I don’t like how corn on the cob usually gets stuck between my crowded front teeth. But perhaps because this is so tender, it doesn’t do that as badly. They described it as “ultra supersweet” and I’m not sure it’s really like candy, but it is very good.

I was hoping I had written when we planted this corn, but I didn’t. I think it was in early June. We also planted  another couple rows of it a few weeks later, and that batch is still developing now. Also, today, I brought in about eight more ears, which were the small ones that didn’t seem ripe enough a week ago. They’re pretty small, and some don’t have good, even rows of kernels, but Dana is excited to eat some tomorrow.
